Runaways was written in 1978 by Elizabeth Swados during a series of theatre workshops conducted with teenage runaways recruited from the streets of New York City. This dramatic musical speaks to the lives of real people -- actual runaways -- their reasons for running away and their methods of survival on the streets.
In the fall of 1990, twenty-five years ago, Mid-Pacific faculty member Linda Johnson directed Runaways and presented it as the premiere celebration of the 1991 fall opening of the School of the Arts. After its original Broadway premiere in 1978 and twenty-five years after our own performance, the play still speaks to the issue of teenage runaways across America.
